Hello,

There are alot of linux-based stuff around. A couple I was/am involved
with include:

Hamlib is a library not only to control ham rigs but receivers and
scanners as well. A number of Linux programs use it to control the
radio and there are generic receiver control applications in Linux.

The SWLFest has talked about Software Defined Radio (SDR) in the past.
The SDR toolkit under Linux is GNURadio. It can also be compiled for
Windows and the Mac.

The really neat hardware to use with GNURadio is the Universal Software
Radio Peripheral.

It would be neat if you could get Matt Ettus to talk about it although
he is in California. Another SDR guy is over in NJ, Bob McGwier, N4HY.
I found a lot of hams involved in AMSAT and TAPR are also involved in
GNURadio and other Ham SDR projects. There seems to be better SDR
hardware being designed every year.

I have done two neat receivers with my USRP so far. They really show I
am a VHF/UHF listener. The first is a SCA Receiver that was done by
modifying the FM Broadcast receiver sample. The SCA Receiver is also a
sample program as my first contribution to GNURadio. The second is a
1090 MHz receiver that receives ADS-B and Mode-S data frames from
Aircraft. This is more complex, required some new building blocks, and
is not finished yet.
