It is a shame that this lull in the 11 year sunspot cycle (and the poor
reception quality) coincides with a time in history when the costs associated
with operating a commercial SW broadcast station are so high and listenership
is declining due to the availability of internet streaming, and some SW
programming being offered on satelite radio. Shortwave has always been able to
cross borders and open minds to the outside world. I have no doubt that SW
radio contributed to the decline of the former Soviet system. I think that if
this had occured at a time higher up in the cycle that some broadcasters might
have opted to stay on-air a bit longer. CRAIG
