Without knowing the terms of the deal or having any particular knowledge of the management of either company, I'd make the following observation: it's probably unrealistic to think that you would get a refund from the new owners. I suspect there is no cash available as part of the purchase for that purpose. The alternative to the current situation is probably the cessation of publication altogether and no compensation whatsoever. For that blame whatever else you like: the economy, bad management by the previous ownership, the sun and moon...
