As for Ubuntu, running the code from the subversion trunk, it was the usual mixup between the system-installed 'diatheke' at /usr/bin, and the binary installed from the trunk at /usr/local/bin. After cleaning it up, the diatheke from trunk behaves fine on Ubuntu. Sorry for the false alarm. :)
