I'm personally partial to all of the Second World War era music, both European and America. Like the first song Joe mentions, "We'll Meet Again," most of the music of that era is romantic, yet melancholy, uplifting and hopeful, yet reserved, especially the earlier stuff, when it was really unknown how Europe was going to come out of the war and rebuild. That would be true in this scenario as well.
And I personally would stay away from patriotic music, regardless for any country. Recovering from a nuclear exchange will not be a "king of the hill," or "we'll dominate," type of environment. I'll bet the BBC playlist had losts of classical music, which would be good as well. Overall soothing. But most of all one will be listening for news, so lots of news if possible at regular intervals, with music and other programming in between. In other words - what radio used to be as much as possible.
