Without getting into the vicissitudes of the British press and politics <g>, I
think Richard Cuff flagged this letter only to the extent it coincided with a
personal concern of his (which I share) that the BBCWS has incrementally
dropped nearly all content (maybe with the exception of "Politics UK",
"Sportsworld" and the occasional Proms concert) that formerly gave the listener
key insights into British society and daily life.

In that regard, I think the letter introduces a topic of valid criticism (the
efficacy of which is at the very least fodder for robust debate).

It's in response to this:

Sir – The BBC has withdrawn the World Service from most European countries,
including France, where many thousands of Britons live.

How does the BBC reconcile making an overseas service more readily available to
Britons who are not overseas, as it has done, while withdrawing it from Britons
who really are overseas?

Philip Perkins, Ramsbury, Wiltshire

The BBC World Service never was a service for ex-patriates who don't pay for
it. And of course it hasn't withdrawn it, it's available on several platforms.
Mr. Perkins also ignores the fact that BBC World Service does broadcast in
languages other than English.

But never let facts get in the way of a letter to the Telegraph, just ignore
them, they'll print anything that fits their agenda.

And while you're about it just throw in words like British repeatedly, mention
the Commonwealth and have a dig at the Labour government like Mr Durrant has
done, then it's bound to get published.
