Podcasts permit a shift of listening time from a set appointment to virtually
any convenient occasion. I do it while taking my daily (more or less) 3 mile
walk, while I’m “plodding along”.

While there are thousands, perhaps tens of thousands, of great podcasts from
other sources, the ones sponsored via public radio have been vetted through the
worthy objectives of the medium.

Here’s what I’ve been listening to recently. I hope you might find these
suggestions — in roughly 90 minute bites -- helpful in enhancing your own
enjoyment of radio, our favorite medium.

“Sports Media’s Big Gamble on the Betting Industry”
ON THE MEDIA - NPR and WNYC New York Public Media
The NCAA's March Madness tournaments crowned men's and women's champions. The
end of "The Big Dance" will also mark the end of one of America's largest
gambling events. An estimated 68 million Americans bet on the madness last
year, a number only expected to rise. The betting boom comes in the protracted
wake of a 2018 Supreme Court decision allowing states to legalize sports
betting. But in addition to sportsbooks and casinos, media companies have
jumped in on this new, legal market—posing ethical questions for journalists
and potentially changing how we view sports. This week, to figure out how we
got here, OTM producer Rebecca Clark-Callender digs into the long history
between the press, sports, and gambling with Brian Moritz, associate professor
and sports media scholar at St. Bonaventure University, Danny Funt, reporter
and contributor to the Washington Post, and Albert Chen, former editor at
Sports Illustrated and author of Billion Dollar Fantasy: The High-Stakes Game
Between FanDuel and DraftKings That Upended Sports in America. . (19”)

“Centrelink and the Robodebt Recovery System”
REAR VISION - ABC Radio National
Centrelink’s 'automated debt recovery system' - or Robodebt - sparked two
Senate inquiries, an Ombudsman inquiry, numerous court cases and caused
enormous stress to thousands of Australians. The Robodebt system has now been
found to be unlawful by the Federal Court, but several questions remain
unanswered. How and why was this system introduced? And why was it allowed to
run for so long? (29”)

"Caroline Darian, daughter of Gisèle Pelicot, tells her own story"
THE SUNDAY MAGAZINE - CBC Radio One
It was one of the most notorious rape trials in French history. Last year,
Dominique Pelicot was convicted and jailed for drugging and raping his
then-wife, Gisèle Pelicot, over the course of a decade – and recruiting dozens
of other men to abuse her while she was unconscious. Gisèle Pelicot opted for a
public trial, making her identity known, to raise awareness for other victims
like her. The trial also put their three adult children in the spotlight. But
one of them says her own experience has been overlooked. Not only was Caroline
Darian forced to reckon with the shocking revelations, but also with the
discovery that photographs of her were found on his computer – and with what
she believes they suggest. Darian shares her journey with Piya Chattopadhyay in
a Canadian broadcast exclusive interview. (46”)
Note: This conversation contains frank discussion of sexual violence.
