Podcasts permit a shift of listening time from a set appointment to virtually any convenient occasion. I do it while taking my daily (more or less) 3 mile walk, while I’m “plodding along”.
While there are thousands, perhaps tens of thousands, of great podcasts from other sources, the ones sponsored via public radio have been vetted through the worthy objectives of the medium. Here’s what I’ve been listening to recently. I hope you might find these suggestions — in roughly 90 minute bites -- helpful in enhancing your own enjoyment of radio, our favorite medium. __ __ “Australia and Canada — Strategic partners, but near total strangers?” FUTURE TENSE - ABC Radio National Australia and Canada share much in common, politically, historically and socially. Why then do we know so little about each other? In a time of global uncertainty does it make sense for Canada and Australia to build a closer bond? If the two prosperous liberal middle powers worked together more closely, could they be a greater force for positive change in the world? Guests: Dr Andrew Lilco — Economist and Executive Director and Principal, Europe Economics; N. Leo Crabe — lecturer and independent researcher. Formerly with the Canadian High Commission in Canberra; Wesley Nicol — The Norman Paterson School of International Affairs, Carleton University (Canada); Emeritus Professor Roy Green — Special Innovation Advisor, University of Technology Sydney; Norman Hermant — Social Affairs Correspondent, Australian Broadcasting Corporation (28”) https://www.abc.net.au/listen/programs/futuretense/australia-canada-strategic-partners-strangers/105368902 “Was Israel Right to Launch Strikes on Iran?” THE MORAL MAZE - BBC Radio 4 Self-defence, as a justification for war, is much more difficult to argue if you strike the first blow. The Israelis say their devastating pre-emptive strike on Iran is a special, truly existential, case. A regime, long committed to their destruction was, according to Israel, within weeks of developing nuclear weapons, just one of which could effectively wipe out their state and most of its citizens. How far does that justify the abandonment of diplomacy, the targeting of leaders, the collateral damage and death? And, by the way, why is it ok for some countries to have The Bomb- and not others?
