Podcasts permit a shift of listening time from a set appointment to virtually
any convenient occasion. I do it while taking my daily (more or less) 3 mile
walk, while I’m “plodding along”.

While there are thousands, perhaps tens of thousands, of great podcasts from
other sources, the ones sponsored via public radio have been vetted through the
worthy objectives of the medium.

Here’s what I’ve been listening to recently. I hope you might find these
suggestions — in roughly 90 minute bites -- helpful in enhancing your own
enjoyment of radio, our favorite medium.

“Mary Beard — Empress of Rome”
BIG IDEAS - ABC Radio Naztional
For decades, Mary Beard has forged her own path through the male dominated
field of academia, from the ruins of Rome to the trenches of Twitter, to become
"the world's most famous classicist". From the wise Augustus to the
hypocritical Tiberius and the barking mad Caligula, Mary Beard uses these Roman
rulers as a lens to examine life in their empire, and asks what lessons they
can teach us about the world today. This event was recorded at Adelaide
Writers' Week on March 3, 2024.
Speakers: Mary Beard, Author, 'Emperor of Rome' (Allen & Unwin), Professor
Emerita of Classics at Cambridge University; Jonty Claypole, Writer,
documentary producer and arts administrator CEO, Red Room Poetry.
Former Director of Arts, BBC (54”)
