Podcasts permit a shift of listening time from a set appointment to virtually any convenient occasion. I do it while taking my daily (more or less) 3 mile walk, while I’m “plodding along”.
While there are thousands, perhaps tens of thousands, of great podcasts from other sources, the ones sponsored via public radio have been vetted through the worthy objectives of the medium. Here’s what I’ve been listening to recently. I hope you might find these suggestions — in roughly 90 minute bites -- helpful in enhancing your own enjoyment of radio, our favorite medium. [Ed. Note: Public service media — the kind that prioritizes serving the public’s requirement for reliable information over securing the support of advertisers through emotional appeals and sensational exhibitionism — is under attack everywhere, but especially at the moment in the United State. When you weigh the decision whether to directly support public service media (if you don’t do so already), be aware of this crucial difference in the respective missions of these two forms. Do you want to be exploited for someone else’s profit or do you want to be truly informed about matters that both affect you and over which you have some direct control through your vote? If you take the time to really think about it, the only correct answer is the latter. Become a sustaining member of your local public service media.] __ __ “2023 Massey Lectures: Beyond Human Security” IDEAS - CBC Radio One The burning of fossil fuels causes the past, present and future to collide in disorienting and destructive ways. In the fourth Massey Lecture, Taylor tells us that as we incinerate our energy inheritance, nature’s timekeeping methods become increasingly confused. As the climate alters, delicately evolved biological clocks erratically speed up or slow down, causing plants and animals to fall out of sync. In a world this out of joint, how could we possibly feel secure? To move forward, Taylor argues we need to move beyond human security — and create security for the plants, animals and ecosystems on which our own security depends. (64”) [Ed. But then US President Donald Trump said he wanted to annexe it for its strategic position and mineral wealth. So the question has become a lot more pressing. With a population of just over 55,000, the biggest island in the world has its own parliament, but foreign policy is controlled by Denmark, something many residents are unhappy about. Denmark subsidises Greenland to the tune of around $10 000 per person per year. On an island where fishing is the primary source of income, independence would mean either increasing tourism or allowing the mining of minerals like rare earth metals. However the islanders have always favoured strict environmental controls when it comes to mining and it’s expensive for tourists. Hedi Nermin Aziz travels from Denmark to Greenland and talks to politicians, musicians and influencers about Greenland’s Innuit identity and to find out if it can and should go it alone.
