Podcasts permit a shift of listening time from a set appointment to virtually
any convenient occasion. I do it while taking my daily (more or less) 3 mile
walk, while I’m “plodding along”. While there are thousands, perhaps tens of
thousands, of great podcasts from other sources, the ones sponsored via public
radio have been vetted through the worthy objectives of the medium. Here’s
what I’ve been listening to recently. I hope you might find these suggestions
— in roughly 90 minute bites -- helpful in enhancing your own enjoyment of
radio, our favorite medium.

“The Sound of Soft Power”
THE DOCUMENTARY - BBC World Service
In 2025, Voice of America was thrust into the spotlight when the bulk of its
funding was taken away. But in an era shaped by the internet and social media
revolutions and with the West's funding priorities changing, it was not the
first international broadcaster to go quiet. The soft power war of the airwaves
has now moved to a decisive phase. Josephine McDermott traces the start of
international radio and its heyday through World War Two and the Cold War as a
tool of soft power. Featuring Thomas Witherspoon, creator of the Shortwave
Radio Audio Archive; Jamie Shea, Nato spokesperson from 1993 to 2000; Sir John
Tusa, managing director of the BBC World Service from 1986 to 1992; Ivana
Stradner, research fellow at the Foundation for Defence of Democracies in the
United States and Nic Newman, senior research associate at the Reuters
Institute for the Study of Journalism at Oxford University, UK. (50”)

“The Red Scare, But Dumber”
ON THE MEDIA - NPR and WNYC New York Public Media
This week, the State Department published a report accusing Cuba of being the
“capital of 21st-century communism,” and of plotting an anti-American
revolution. Why the Trump administration can’t stop invoking Cuba as its
“communist” bogeyman. Plus, hear from a former flight attendant turned
independent journalist, who is doggedly covering ICE’s removal flights. (37”)
