Dear All
This Wednesday, at 3.30 in The Refectory, we will hear Christoph
Hoerl speak on
'The concept of causation: hows and whys'
Abstract: Some people claim that it is part of our concept of
causation that, when A causes B, there is a mechanism by which it does
so. Others say that this claim is confused or, at any rate, false. I
will suggest one way of thinking of what might be at stake in this
debate, according to which it turns, at least in part, on the
following question: Is it part of our common sense concept of
causation that causation is always subject to spatial enabling
conditions? I will outline a role that this idea might be seen to play
in our common sense concept of causation by appealing to some
considerations from the philosophy of perception.
At 2PM in the departmental seminar room there will be a pre-talk to
explain the background to the talk for those outside the area, and
who are otherwise interested! All grad students especially encouraged
to attend.
cheers
d
