Philosophy Common Room, 1.00-2.30 Then October 15 we have Richard Corry, UTas, talking to us about "Emergent Laws" Abstract: Recently, the concept of emergence has regained popularity in science and in philosophy. Unfortunately, apart from the core idea that emergence involves situations in which the whole is greater than (or at least different to) the sum of its parts, there is much disagreement and confusion surrounding the notion. Some authors have epistemological notions in mind, others have metaphysical notions, whilst others seem to slip between the two. Furthermore, robust accounts of emergence often turn on deep issues in metaphysics that are contentious among philosophers and can turn off scientists. In this paper I attempt to provide a metaphysics-lite characterisation of true metaphysical emergence that I hope will be acceptable to most people. I then explore some of the issues involved with empirically attributing such emergence to a complex system.
