Abstract. This paper focuses on a problem for reductive externalist versions
of representationalism involving the determination of experiential content.
The problem of aspectual shape arises when a perceptual system indicates two
properties but can only represent one of them. In the first instance, I
explain how the problem arises in Dretske's teleological version of
representationalism and place it within the context of a central debate in
teleological semantics concerning the determination of content. Then I
introduce a novel example of the problem of aspectual shape for which, I go
on to argue, neither Tye's causal co-variation nor Dretske's teleological
versions of representationalism provide a satisfactory response. I conclude
by noting a further consequence: contra Dretske, reductive externalist
versions of representationalism are not always able to tell us what it is
like to sense via an unusual sensory modality.

With best wishes,
