CHAN BUDDHISM

Some themes from "Chan Buddhism" by Peter D Hershock.

Blurb on the back cover says in part: "Known in Japan as Zen and in Korea as
Son, [Chan] is one of the most strikingly iconoclastic spiritual traditions in
the world. This succinct and lively work... provides useful insights into the
distinctive aims and forms of practice associated with the tradition, including
its emphasis on the unity of wisdom and practice, the reality of 'sudden
awakening,' the importance of meditation, the use of 'shock tactics,' the
centrality of the teacher-student relationship, and the celebration of
enlightenment narratives."

Location: members bar, floor 1 (keep winding up to the top of the stairs), The
Gaelic Club, 64 Devonshire Street, Surry Hills, Sydney (100 metres from a
Central railway station exit). Look for a group of people with notepads and
books who are taking it in turns to speak. Usually we'll be armed with the
Oxford Companion to Philosophy, and a bell. Probably we'll be **out on the
terrace**.

No cost. No prerequisite reading. All welcome!

Regards,

Adrian
