Greetings all,

This coming Monday, April 28, 1.00-2.30 in the
philosophy common room, Warren Goldfarb, Harvard
University, will talk to us about "Wittgenstein
against Logicism."

Abstract:

Wittgenstein's characterization of logical operations
in the Tractatus turns out to include more than
first-order quantification theory, in its allowance of
certain infinitary truth-functions. This enables
Wittgenstein to dispense with the Frege-Russell
apparatus for the logicist reduction. Reflection on
the philosophical grounds for his characterization,
moreover, brings to light a deep divergence from Frege
and Russell at their starting point, namely, how they
understand the distinction between the logical and the
psychological. The issue clarifies Wittgenstein's
basic stance in philosophy of mathematics, which
persists through his later work.

See you there....
