Wayne Christensen (Macquarie University) will present a paper titled
Towards an integrative framework for agency
abstract
Agency is arguably one of the most fundamental issues for philosophy
and the human sciences. Yet the study of agency-related issues is
spread across many fields and disciplines, amongst which communication
is erratic at best. This talk argues that an integrative approach is
needed, in which the many aspects of agency, including value, action
control, sense-of-agency, and agentic coherence, are brought together
into a single coherent picture. As part of the larger project I argue
for a robust naturalisation of volition based on recent cognitive
neuroscience research on executive control, and discuss implications
for understanding addiction and autonomous agency.
