Greetings all, this coming Monday, May 12 at 1.00-2.30 in the philosophy common room Larry Shapiro will talk to us about "Embodied challenges to cognitivism". See you all there...
Abstract: The traditional rules and representation conception of the mind has been assailed of late by researchers working in the field of embodied cognition. But what, exactly, is embodied cognition and what is the nature of the challenge it presents to old-school cognitivism? I have isolated three sort of distinct research programs that folks doing embodied cognition appear to pursue (You'll note the tentative nature of this claim. If you're familiar with the embodied cognition literature, you'll understand why.) In my talk, I'll discuss what these three programs are and will say some words about whether, if at all, they might force a shift in our understanding of how the mind works.
