Greetings all, This coming Monday, June 2, 1.00-2.30 in the philosophy common room our own (or our own ex?) John Cusbert will answer the question "Do actual agents obey decision theory?"
Abstract: There are various arguments against the claim that decision theory provides a good model of actual, real life decisions. Real agents, for example, often act altruistically or irrationally and, even if they didn't, the computational demands of using decision theory would be well beyond their limited means and capacities. I'll try to identify a sense in which decision theory gives a good account of (certain types of) real life decisions, and suggest that the theory tells us something interesting about actual agents.
