Greetings all,

This semester's current projects starts up again this coming Monday, July 28.
To kick off we have Conrad Heilmann (London School of Economics) who will talk
to us about Time Discounting in the Multiple-Self.

As usual, we are in the philosophy common room 1.00-2.30.

See you there...

Abstract

The concept of time discounting is used to introduce weights on future goods,
making these less valuable for the decision-maker. Yet it remains unclear why
value-making features of a state of the world should depend on its temporal
occurrence. The talk presents a simple model of the multiple-self that deals
with this question.

The talk is structured as follows. Firstly, a representation of time
discounting in intertemporal decisions is offered: drawing on a multiple-self
interpretation of personal identity over time, it is shown that discounting can
be represented as diminishing connectedness between different temporal selves
within a person. Secondly, the representation facilitates a discussion and
representation of special cases of discounting, namely exponential and
hyperbolic discounting. Thirdly, it is shown that with additional assumptions,
the representations can also be used in a normative justification of time
discounting.
