Greetings all, This coming Monday, 1.00-2.30 in the philosophy common room, Mark Jago from Macquarie University will talk to us about "the modal account of vagueness"
Abstract This talk is about some recent attempts to give a new way of thinking about vagueness in the world. The idea is a story about ontic vagueness which looks a lot like supervaluationism: there's a number of admissible ways to sharpen up any vague matter, none of which are any better than the others, so what's true (simpliciter) is what's true according to each sharpening. According to the ontic account, it's the world (rather than our language) that gets sharpened. The sharpenings are themselves worlds, and so vagueness-talk ends up looking a lot like talk about possibility and necessity. I don't think these modal accounts of vagueness work. I'll go through several proposed modal accounts of vagueness and show that each falls short of the mark. See you all there....
