Greetings all, This coming Monday, October 13, 1.00-2.30 in the philosophy common room Anik Waldow, a new recruit to the University of Sydney, will talk to us about "Bridging the Gap – Can Conceptual Analysis Solve the Problem of Other Minds?"
Abstract In recent years attempts have been undertaken to solve the epistemological problem of other minds by conceptual analysis. As the argument goes, if we understand that it is wrong to conceive of mind in a Cartesian fashion as isolated from the world and the mind’s behavioural expressions, questions about the existence of other minds become pointless. I will show that to make this argument work it is insufficient to point to the experienceability of mind; in addition, one needs to bind the veridicality of concepts to the obtaining of those circumstances about which they purport to be. Hence, I will urge that conceptual analysis need not only clarify our understanding of what mind is, but must take issue with the conditions necessary for concept formation. See you all there...
