HUMAN RIGHTS
Location: members bar, floor 1 (keep winding up to the top of the stairs), The
Gaelic Club, 64 Devonshire Street, Surry Hills, Sydney (100 metres from a
Central railway station exit). Look for a group of people with notepads and
books who are taking it in turns to speak. Usually we'll be armed with the
Oxford Companion to Philosophy, and a bell. Probably we'll be ***out on the
terrace***.
No cost. No prerequisite reading. All welcome!
Changing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. (James Robertsand John
Bentley)The Australian government has formed a National Human Rights
ConsultationCommittee. The committee will report back to the government on 31
July 2009,conveying views from Australians. The terms of references from:
http://www.humanrightsconsultation.gov.au/www/nhrcc/nhrcc.nsf/Page/Terms_of_Reference:
"The Committee will ask the Australian community:* Which human rights
(including corresponding responsibilities) should beprotected and promoted?*
Are these human rights currently sufficiently protected and promoted?* How
could Australia better protect and promote human rights? "Jumping past a morass
of, often important, issues and assumptions we believethe most important
question here is:What changes should we make to the Universal Declaration of
Human Rights? We'll offer some.Although not required, reading the Declaration
will be of benefit:
