A Focus on the Future Lecture 2009
An Institute of Sustainable Solutions Initiative

Paul Gilding, Australian writer and activist for action on climate change and
sustainability

Paul Gilding believes we have entered a period of global ecological crisis and
economic stagnation that will last for decades. This will lead to an economic
and social transformation of significance in the history of humanity. This
crisis is now inevitable because the fundamental drivers are not opinion or
politics but the established momentum of changes in the ecosystem. This is not
philosophy, it's physics and biology.

350: Why this is the Most Important Number for the Environment

Bill McKibben, US journalist and environmental activist

The most recent science tells us that unless we can reduce the amount of carbon
dioxide in the atmosphere to 350 parts per million, we will cause huge and
irreversible damage to the earth. Leading US environmental journalist and
best-selling author, Bill McKibben, has set up a worldwide campaign, 350.org,
to educate and advocate for this number to be set as a target at the Copenhagen
United Nations Climate Change Conference in December 2009. In his exclusive
lecture for Sydney Ideas, he will talk about how climate science and climate
politics are quickly evolving, as well as his role as an activist in the US.
