Epistemology and reason this week!
At 3.30 PM in The Refectory, TODAY Wed 29 April Mike Titlebaum (ANU)
will speak to us on
Not Enough There There: Reasons, Evidence, and Language Independence
I begin with a result generalizing Goodman-style language dependence
arguments to any view holding that a body of evidence can favor one
hypothesis over another. The result reveals not only a flaw in
algorithms for detecting evidential favoring, but also a deeper
limitation on the informational content of evidential corpora. This
limitation creates a problem for a wide variety of philosophical
positions—such as those maintaining there are evidential
probabilities, strong rationality constraints, or objective reasons
for belief—a problem which is not solved by the existence of natural
properties.
Pre-talk at 2PM as usual in the common room
Sorry about late delivery of the final notice.
