Hi,
A reading group on philosophy of the Self will begin meeting
fortnightly from Wednesday 1 July 11:30am-1:00pm in the Philosophy
Common Room (Main Quad) at the University of Sydney. Areas to be
covered include personal identity, agency and consciousness, but will
be directed by the group's interests.
For the next few session we'll be working through selected essays from
J. David Velleman's collection Self to Self, beginning with Chapter 8,
'Self to Self'. Its most readily available in JSTOR as 'Self to Self'
The Philosophical Review 105 (1996), 39-76
<http://www.jstor.org/stable/2185763>. Here Velleman presents his view
that 'self' does not refer to a single entity, but is a term used to
express a reflexive mode of presentation in which one presents a part
or aspect of oneself to oneself.
The introduction to the collection lays provides a helpful overview of
his theory. Email me at <[email protected]> if you would like
a pdf copy of the introduction or the article, or for directions to
the Common Room. Please direct any other enquiries to myself, or to
Glen Carruthers <[email protected]> or Wayne Christensen
<[email protected]> at Macquarie University.
All very welcome.
Thanks,
Alison Fernandes,
University of Sydney
