WARRANT
Self-determining actors can act from reasons. To do so they must be able to
audit those reasons to assess whether they have warrant, that is sufficient
reason, to act, or whether they have reason to investigate further in order
to acquire warrant; and they must be able to act from their recognition of
a warrant. These points have far-reaching implications for an account of
reasons. In this paper I focus on a somewhat Kantian implication.
Knowledge of reason relations must be a priori, if we can know what reasons
we have. But self-determination requires that we can know that. So
self-determination requires that reason-relations must be a priori. To see
how this works we shall have to see how epistemic reasons, reasons for
belief, play a certain special role within the whole domain of reasons.
