This coming Tuesday, we have Graeme Forbes (Sheffield, UK) talking to
us on:
‘When am I?’ vs. Zeno’s Arrow
11-12, philosophy seminar room, level 7 building W6A, Macquarie
University.
Everyone welcome.
Abstract:
The Growing-Block view of time (according to which the flow of time
consists in the sum-total of existence increasing as events come into
existence) has faced a number of objections recently. Bourne (2006)
puts forward what I call the ‘When am I?’ problem, which causes a
problem for any view that claims the modal/ontological status of the
past is just like the modal/ontological status of the present. Le
Poidevin (2002) has reformulated Zeno’s arrow paradox in such a way as
it causes a problem for any view which claims that the only time at
which things happen is the present. I wish to claim that these two
views form a dilemma for the Growing-Block view, the horns of which it
must avoid to be a tenable view. I will briefly explain what the
Growing-Block view is, then motivate the dilemma between the ‘When am
I?’ problem and Zeno’s Arrow Paradox. Finally, I will try to show a
way that I believe allows the Growing-Block view to find its way
between the horns.
