The philosophical use and misuse of science

Philosophers often appeal to scientific results and scientific theories in support of philosophical conclusions, and so they should: surely philosophical theories should be informed by, or at the very least consistent with, our best science. However, this needs to be done with care. Which is the good science? How can we identify it? Many philosophers appeal to new and/or highly speculative scientific theories (mirror neuron theory is an example): are there any philosophical uses to which such theories can legitimately be put, and if so, what are they? This paper identifies some of the pitfalls involved in philosophical appeals to science, and makes some suggestions about how to avoid them.
