Title: PG WIP Seminar: Ian Lawson
Philosophy Postgrad Work-In-Progress Seminar
Ian Lawson, "Gödel and Ideal Time: an argument from possible worlds"
In 1949 Kurt Gödel found a solution to Einstein's Field Equations -- the
equations that underpin the General Theory of Relativity -- that he thought
implied time does not exist. This argument for the ideality of time has
been all but ignored in the philosophical literature. The definitive
treatment of it came in 1995 when John Earman examined some of Gödel's
underlying assumptions and found them lacking. However I think support for
Gödel can be found in other areas of philosophy, in particular the
literature on the Laws of Nature. In this talk I will have a look at what
needs to be done to Gödel's argument to make it valid, and whether these
moves can be justified.
Everyone is welcome to attend.
If you would like to present or require further information, please contact
Nick Malpas at [email protected]. The format is 30 minutes for
presentations followed by 1 hour of discussion. Since the primary aim of
this seminar is to generate discussion, presentations need not be
particularly polished or formal.
