Next Tuesday (17 Nov), the Macquarie philosophy work-in-progress talk
will be given by Lise Marie Andersen (Macquarie), on
Interventionism and Mental Causation – Problem Solved?
11–12 in the philosophy seminar room, W6A, Macquarie University. All
welcome.
Abstract:
Woodward (2008) argues that the debate about mental causation in the
last decades has rested on a misconceived notion of causation.
According to Woodward, adopting an interventionist model of causation
resolves the issue of mental causation and reveals it to be an
empirical question. He first argues that there is no a priori barrier
to mental causation; and then goes on to give an example of a
plausible case of mental causation. I agree with Woodward that the
issue of mental causation is an empirical question. However, I argue
that the interventionist solution faces serious objections which make
it questionable whether it is in fact a solution after all.
See you there,
