Locke on personal identity and accountability: a tale of severed appendages

Locke illustrates his theory of personal identity with some striking examples involved severed limbs. They involve suppositions which, in Locke’s own assessment, “may appear strange.” In this paper I explore the implications for our understanding of personal responsibility of Locke’s suggestion that a little finger might conceivably take the consciousness and therefore the responsible identity of a person with it when it is parted from the rest of the body. I connect Locke’s theory of identity with his theory of property, and make a reading of a film by Michael Haneke, Caché (Hidden), in order to explore the relevance of Locke’s strange suppositions to our understanding of responsibility in the era of post-colonial politics and massive global inequities in the distribution of wealth.

A warning to regular attendees of the Current Projects Seminar: after this paper, you may never hear the request to raise your appendages in quite the same way again.
