The School of History and Philosophy, University of New South Wales presents:
Lionel Shapiro (University of Connecticut) What Are We Thinking “Of”? Case Studies in Descartes and Locke Abstract: I will tell a story about how two very different Early Modern philosophers, Descartes and Locke, both find a need to distinguish between two ways in which thought is directed at objects. According to both philosophers, I will argue, the very same "idea" can simultaneously count as "of" two different objects—in two different senses of the phrase 'idea of'. This interpretation makes sense of puzzling features of the texts, and points to distinctive aspects of Descartes’s and Locke’s philosophical projects. I will ask whether present-day theorists of "mental representation" might have something to learn from the pressures that lead Descartes and Locke to appeal to two kinds of "ofness." Lionel Shapiro is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the University of Connecticut and a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Centre for Time, University of Sydney. He has published in Philosophy and Phenomenological Research, Kant-Studien, The Philosophical Quarterly, and the Philosophical Studies, among other journals. His research interests include philosophy of language, philosophy of mind, philosophy of logic, and issues of intentionality in early modern philosophy. When? Tuesday 13 April, 1 p.m. Where?
