USYD Philosophy Postgraduate Work-In-Progress Seminar Monday 3rd of May, 3:30-5:00pm, Philosophy Common Room (Main Quad, University of Sydney)
Alison Fernandes: 'Existence Before Truth in Characterising Realism' Philosophers such as Philip Pettit uphold a commitment to a meaningful realist doctrine. For Pettit, realism can be cashed out partly in terms of a metaphysical commitment, to entities existing independently of mental states of participants in a discourse, and an epistemological commitment, to the truths of the discourse being answerable to an independent reality. I will argue that once we take the discourse to be assertoric, this distinction collapses, with the metaphysical commitment being the more fundamental. This has implications not only for the classification of theories, but also for how a substantive realist/anti-realist debate might be pursued. Everyone is welcome to attend. If you would like to present or require further information, please contact Nick Malpas at [email protected] The format is 30 minutes for presentations followed by 1 hour of discussion. Since the primary aim of this seminar is to generate discussion, presentations need not be particularly polished or formal.
