Title: Dominic Murphy
Delusions and Folk Epistemology

Abstract: I suggest that the correct way to think about the concept of delusion is that it marks a class of beliefs that are inexplicable using the constraints of what I call 'folk epistemology. Folk epistemology is a collection of common sense assumptions about the ways beliefs are caused. I suggest that seeing delusions in this way solves some of the familiar puzzles about the concept, but it also raises worries that delusions may not be a natural kind amenable to a unified scientific
treatment.
