Title: Mark Jago
'Advanced Modalizing'
Abstract: Genuine modal realism, the theory of modality put forward by
David Lewis, has difficulty in dealing with cases of advanced modalizing,
such as ‘it is possible that there are many possible worlds’. On the
genuine modal realist understanding of possibility, such claims come out
false, and yet they are claims which the genuine modal realist takes to be
true. John Divers presents a solution to the problem, according to which
the modal operators are semantically redundant in such cases. I will argue
that a similar problem arises even for cases of ordinary modalizing, to
which Divers’s redundancy account cannot apply.
