Title: Anik Waldow
Animal Sentience and the Human Bête Machine

In this paper I will investigate the limits of Cartesian bodies by examining the differences between the human animal machine and the animal machine proper. To develop a clearer grasp of what animal machines can (and cannot) do is desirable not only because it allows us to refute many of the stereotypical views about Descartes dualism: if it can be shown that a range of psychological functions, such as sensation and imagination, are attributable to animals, which ex hypothesi lack an immaterial mind, it becomes clear that Descartes is ready to consider many of the phenomena that we today call mental as phenomena that bodies can produce; beside this, it also enables us to see that Descartes’ reflections on animal machines serve the purpose of negotiating the moral potential of embodied creatures whose bodies are governed by mechanical procedures.
