The Virtue Theory of Mary Astell (1666-1731)

A contemporary of John Locke, Mary Astell was an English feminist and
philosopher of the late seventeenth century. In this paper, I offer an
interpretation of her feminist project from the point of view of her wider
moral theory. I examine the importance of 'excellence of character' in her
thought, and especially the virtues of prudence, love, generosity, courage
and friendship; I suggest that her approach might be of interest to
present-day feminist ethics
