Title: Stewart Cohen
Bootstrapping and Defeasible Reasoning
The bootstrapping problem arises for basic knowledge
theories--theories that allow us to know without knowing our cognitive
processes are reliable, e.g., Reliabilism, Dogmatism. I argue that there
is a
surprising connection between defeasible inference rules and a priori
reasons,
and that this connection can rescue these theories from the bootstrapping
problem. This strategy requires significant reorienting of basic knowledge
theories.
