Dear All,

Carlo Martini from the Tilburg Centre for Logic and Philosophy of
Science will be presenting at the HPS Research Seminar on the 9th August
2010 from 6pm in room 450 (the Science Meeting Room) Carslaw Building:

TITLE: Expert Judgment as a Methodological Problem in Economics

ABSTRACT: Economic methodology is, at present, mostly concerned with the
development and refinement of economic models. The almost unchallenged
paradigm is that economic models are the basic source of knowledge of
economic phenomena. Several examples, however, show that the precision
and quality of predictive knowledge that can be derived from economic
models is limited.

In this paper I start from the paradigm of economics as an inexact
science to argue that the role and judgment of experts is essential in
the production of economic knowledge applicable to policy making. The
limitations and biases that characterize expert judgment, nonetheless,
suggest that one of the focuses of economic methodology should be in the
enhancement and amelioration of expert judgment, and in particular of
collective expert judgment.

And of course all are very welcome.

Regards
