6.30pm, Wednesday 11 August 2010 (every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month)
Overview of book by Primo Levi. Wikipedia writes:
"If This Is a Man ... is a work by the Italian writer, Primo Levi, describing
his 11 months -- from February 21, 1944 until liberation on January 27, 1945 --
in the German concentration camp at Auschwitz in Poland, during the Second
World War. The book is described as a memoir, but it goes beyond mere
recollection by seeking to consider in narrative form the human condition in
all its extremes."
We'll start just after 6.30pm, and continue till 8pm-8.30pm. Format is usually:
short speech, then two or three rounds of discussion, with breaks in-between.
Often we'll go to dinner afterwards. Participants are welcome to come or to
leave at any point during the evening.
No cost. No reading required beforehand. All welcome!
Location: members bar, floor 1 (keep winding up to the top of the stairs), The
Gaelic Club, 64 Devonshire Street, Surry Hills, Sydney (100 metres from a
Central railway station exit). We'll be armed with the Oxford Companion to
Philosophy and a bell. Usually we meet ***out on the terrace***. Usually a
small group -- half a dozen people sitting in a circle.
Hope to see you there!
Adrian
