Hi All

Just a reminder of tonight's (9th August) HPS talk to be held in Room
441 (Science Meeting Room) Carslaw Building, Camperdown Campus,
University of Sydney:

Carlo Martini (Tilburg University)

"Expert Judgment as a Methodological Problem in Economics"

Economic methodology is, at present, mostly concerned with the
development and refinement of economic models. The almost unchallenged
paradigm is that economic models are the basic source of knowledge of
economic phenomena. Several examples, however, show that the precision
and quality of predictive knowledge that can be derived from economic
models is limited.

In this paper I start from the paradigm of economics as an inexact
science to argue that the role and judgment of experts is essential in
the production of economic knowlege applicable to policy making. The
limitations and biases that characterise expert judgment, nonetheless,
suggest that one of the focuses of economic methodology should be in the
enhancement and amelioration of expert judgment, and in particular of
collective expert judgment.

All are of course very welcome
