Louise Richardson-Self, "Revisiting ‘Little Rock’"
ABSTRACT: The views espoused by Hannah Arendt on marriage as a fundamental
human right in her Reflections on Little Rock are often cited in the
same-sex marriage debate. Advocates of same-sex marriage (recently, in
Australia, Rodney Croome) often rely on analogous arguments between
same-sex marriage and interracial marriage to show that having the right to
marry is, “synonymous with freedom from second-class legal and social
status” (Croome, 2010: 8). The questions explored here concern whether this
analogy is a useful and valid one. In order to discern the answer to these
questions this paper offers a detailed evaluation and analysis of ‘Little
Rock’ as a whole, with specific focus on the characterisation of the
political, social and private realms in Arendt’s thought. It aims to
identify what role marriage plays in each of these areas. It also questions
whether marriage is an institution which all people can legitimately claim
a right to, especially in countries such as Australia (unlike the United
States), which have no Bill of Rights, for example.
