Fitting Quantum Theory into a Block Universe
Ken Wharton, San Jose State University
After reviewing the physics-based conceptual arguments for and against a
block universe, it becomes clear that all of the strong counter-arguments
arise from quantum theory. While some choose to use this as motivation to
discard the block universe altogether, I propose instead that the block
universe is our best guide for re-interpreting quantum theory in a manner
consistent with general relativity.
With this in mind, I will go through quantum theory's major conflicts with
a block universe and outline how these conflicts might best be addressed.
These issues include: 1) probabilistic outcomes and the quantum collapse,
2) large-dimension parameter spaces for entangled particles, and 3)
problems in quantum cosmology.
