CHAST IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THE FIRST TEMPLETON LECTURE FOR 2010
The lecture will be preceded by a short tribute to the late Charles Birch in recognition of his generosity in funding the Templeton Lectures at the University of Sydney and his outstanding contributions to science and society in Australia and worldwide. TITLE: Evolving the City: Using Evolutionary Theory to Understand and Improve the Human Condition SPEAKER David Sloan Wilson WHERE: EASTERN AVENUE AUDITORIUM, UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY WHEN: WEDNESDAY 29TH SEPTEMBER 2010 AT 6 PM ABSTRACT: The most distressing fact about public awareness of evolution is not that roughly 50% of Americans don't believe the theory but that nearly 100% worldwide don't appreciate its tremendous relevance to human affairs. I will show how evolutionary theory can help to solve the problems of everyday life, from the quality of life in our cities to rethinking the fundamentals of economic theory and policy. BIOGRAPHY David Sloan Wilson (http://evolution.binghamton.edu/dswilson/ <https://www.mcws.usyd.edu.au/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://evolution .binghamton.edu/dswilson/> ) is SUNY Distinguished Professor of Biology and Anthropology at Binghamton University. He applies evolutionary theory to all aspects of humanity in addition to the rest of life, both in his own research and by directing programs designed to reform higher education and public policy formulation. He is known for championing the theory of multilevel selection, which has implications ranging from the origin of life to the nature of religion. His books include Darwin's Cathedral: Evolution, Religion, and the Nature of Society (Chicago, 2002) and Evolution for Everyone: How Darwin's Theory Can Change the Way We Think About Our Lives (Bantam, 2007). His next book is titled The Neighborhood Project: Using Evolution to Improve My City, One Block At A Time (Little, Brown).
