Title:
“Genealogy” and Nietzsche's Genealogy

Abstract:
Among the many rich veins of philosophical gold that run through
Nietzsche’s On the Genealogy of Morality is a methodological one,
namely the idea of ‘genealogy’ as a philosophical approach. This idea
is now associated with the work of Michel Foucault and, more recently,
the work of Bernard Williams, both of whom refer to Nietzsche in this
connection. But the extent to which the approaches of either Foucault
or Williams reflect Nietzsche’s own approach is questionable, as is
the basic idea that there is some distinct method called ‘genealogy’
in the Genealogy. This article discusses what a “genealogy’” might be,
how it relates to naturalism, and its normative standing in relation
to the project of the re-valuation of values. I begin by arguing for a
conception of genealogy per se as that of situated psychological
explanation of the emergence beliefs and practices, something that
Nietzsche has in common with his “English” predecessors. I then
discuss the sense in which Nietzsche’s particular genealogy
constitutes, or contributes to, a “critique” of morality, and argue
that its function is a preparatory one. The genealogy provides a
reason to seek further justification for the central commitments of
morality and so prepares the ground for the project of the
“revaluation of values”. It does so by revealing that the sources
productive of the relevant moral beliefs are epistemically unreliable,
and hence depriving such beliefs of their assumed privileged status
