Barry Rafe: 'The assessment of moral debates in a contemporary liberal
society'
ABSTRACT: My thesis is inspired by the current debate concerning ethics
training in NSW public schools. Against significant resistance from the
Christian lobby, a trial program has offered primary school children who
have opted out of scripture, the opportunity to participate in a class on
ethics. Notwithstanding the fact that the trial has seen almost half the
children eligible opt for ethics training, the Christian lobby are strongly
resisting moves by the NSW Government to formalise ethics courses. Using
this NSW debate as a case study I will discuss more broadly the criteria
used to evaluate moral debates in a contemporary liberal society. I will
firstly discuss different conceptions of liberalism and identify Rawlsian
liberalism as my utopian position. I will then develop a number of tools
inspired by Rorty to establish the extent to which proposed changes in
formalised moral codes are morally progressive, i.e. move society towards
the utopian position. I will apply my tools to the NSW public school debate.
