Anthony Hooper: 'Immortal Fame: Plato on Immortality in the Symposium'
ABSTRACT: Immortality is a central element of Plato's Middle Period
metaphysics, and it is discussed in some way in all of the dialogues of
this period. However, it is universally recognised that Plato's
presentation of immortality in the Symposium is dramatically different to
that in any other dialogue. In this paper I account for this difference by
arguing that the immortality that is the focus of Plato's attention in the
Symposium is of a very different kind to that which he considers elsewhere.
Where the majority of his discussions of immortality concern the
persistence of disembodied souls in a super-sensible realm after death, I
argue that, in the Symposium, Plato is attempting to show how people can
achieve some amount of immortality in this world. In my analysis I: I)
describe the nature of the immortality Plato recommends here; ii) determine
how this immortality is to be achieved; and iii) say a few words concerning
the problems people face in achieving this immortality.
