Relationally Individualistic: Feminist Accounts of Relational Autonomy and Political Claims of Non-Liberal Groups

Feminists developed the conceptual architecture of relational autonomy to respond to what they perceived as an overly individualistic orientation within traditional accounts of autonomy. This paper will argue that while the feminist approaches to relational autonomy point to the fact that individuals are engaged in fundamentally important relationships with others, they are inappropriate for responding to the political claims of non-liberal groups. I will first briefly describe what feminists mean when they argue that autonomy is relational. Then I will argue that relational autonomy cannot provide the foundational justification for the political claims for non-liberal groups because, at least in the dominant interpretations surveyed, relational autonomy is self-refuting, unaccommodating of deep normative diversity and overly individualistic.
