USYD Philosophy Postgraduate Work-in-Progress Seminar
Andrew Donnelly: "The Spunk of a Rabbit: Huck, Sympathy and Conscience"
ABSTRACT: I argue that emotions are necessarily involved in judgements of
conscience though they are not necessarily involved in bare moral
judgement. In this paper I will address a ‘Huckleberry Finn’ objection to
this claim. Huckleberry Finn appeared to believe that right action involved
offering a slave up for capture to slave-hunters. Yet when push came to
shove, he couldn’t do what he believed he ought to do. In Huck’s own words,
he ‘hadn’t the spunk of a rabbit’. Jonathan Bennett argues that in this
situation Huck is acting in contravention of a judgement of conscience,
though it is a judgement which has no clear emotional component and leaves
Huck unmoved. I will offer reasons why Bennett’s analysis is wrong – Huck
was not making a judgement of conscience when he believed that he ought to
nark.
Everyone is welcome to attend.
